Airstream Promises More Off-Grid Time With New, Optional Enhanced Energy E1 Package

This week, Airstream introduced an all-new, optional E1 Package power system upgrade for its Mercedes-Benz touring coach lineup that it says will allow travelers to stay off the grid longer. Compared to a standard configuration, the E1 Package provides up to 10X more battery power, it says. The package combines a 12.1-kilowatt-hour lithium battery pack from Volta Power Systems with a Timberline 2.0 hydronic single-fuel-source heating and hot water system, which uses the same diesel that powers the vehicle’s engine, meaning liquid propane isn’t required.

What’s Included

The core of the E1 Package is a 12-kWh lithium battery pack with built-in battery disconnect. Also included is a 1,100-watt single burner induction cook top, a 3,200-W pure sine wave inverter, two 30-amp DC-DC converters, a secondary 51-volt 6900-W alternator, a Victron 100-20 solar charge controller, and two external solar ports that provide a combined 600 W of solar power.

When off-grid, the sine inverter provides AC power to the outlets, appliances, microwave, cooktop, and air conditioner. Available power to air conditioner ranges from 8 to 10 estimated hours. Connected to shore power, the 30-A converters can provide continuous 12-V power to the fridge and internal and external LED lights. Airstream says the secondary alternator lets owners charge the house batteries by driving the touring coach, with no generator needed. The system can actively recharge the batteries to a 30% recharge in 20 minutes, and return them to full charge in 2 hours.

With the upgraded Timberline 2.0 heating and hot water system, Airstream says travelers can expect on-demand hot water delivered to the sinks and shower, plus toasty inside conditions on colder days.
