Bigger than Class B RVs but smaller than Class A units, Class C motorhomes deliver a nice blend of size, space, and amenities with maneuverability, a tighter turning radius, and towing capability.
Read More (About Class C Motorhomes)Class C motorhomes reside in the space between long Class A RVs and compact Class B camper vans in almost every way. They can typically sleep four to eight people with the help of an extra sleeping compartment above the truck cab, making gasoline- or diesel-powered Class C motorhomes one of the best options for a family.
They’re typically 24 to 32 feet (7.3 to 9.75 meters) long, with some as short as 20 ft (6.1 m) and others as long as 38 ft (11.6 m) or more. (Super C motorhomes are longer.) A new Class C RV will cost you anywhere between $67,500 and $500,000 or more, but you can find used Class C motorhomes for sale starting around the $15,000 mark or even lower, depending on model year, condition, and mileage.
For those who don’t want to tow a camper behind their primary vehicle or drive an RV based on a bus, Class C motorhomes may be the perfect fit. They’re often built on cutaway van or truck chassis such as the Ford E-450 or E-350, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500, and Chevrolet 3500 or 4500.
Compared to larger Class A motorhomes, a Class C is more affordable, easier to maneuver, and has better fuel economy. Class C units also have more living space than Class B and Class B+ RVs (camper vans or conversion vans), which becomes noticeable in areas such as the bathroom, refrigerator size, number of bunks, and storage compartments.
Class C RVs come in a variety of floor plan options to accommodate families and couples. The number of beds will vary from model to model, but you will typically get one queen bed in a rear primary bedroom, the Class C signature bed above the cab, and a few extras such as bunk beds, a convertible sofa or dinette, or a Murphy bed. You’ll also get a cooking area, bathroom, and dinette, as you’d expect from a Class A or Class B alternative, and possibly washer and dryer hookups.
Other amenities, such as outdoor entertainment features, make Class C units great for tailgate parties. For example, the 2025 Thor Motor Coach Quantum SE 28 Class C gas motorhome offers an optional outdoor kitchen with a grill and an optional exterior TV.
Class C motorhomes drive like an average truck or van, but most have the added benefit of being able to tow at least a small car behind them. Towing capacity ranges from about 3,000 to 8,000 pounds (1,360 to 3,630 kilograms). All else being equal, Class C diesel RVs generally have more towing capacity (and longevity when used as a tow vehicle) than a Class C gas RV, but this is not always the case due to variations in engine size.
For example, the gasoline-powered 7.3-liter “Godzilla” engine gives the Winnebago Minnie Winnie an approximate maximum towing capacity of 7,500 lbs (3,400 kg). In comparison, the Winnebago View, with a far smaller 2.0-L turbo-diesel engine, saves on fuel costs but can only tow up to 5,000 lbs (2,270 kg). Diesel models cost more up front, as well. To avoid damage and unsafe conditions, be sure to follow all towing instructions from the manufacturers of your RV and car.
Despite being smaller than Class A motorhomes, Class C models still provide quite a bit of room not only for living and sleeping but also for storage. Depending on how many people are in the RV at any given time, you won’t feel quite as wedged in as you might with some compact Class B vehicles. In addition, many Class C motorhomes for families come equipped with a slide-out or two to create even more interior space when the RV is parked.
Exterior storage compartments provide externally accessible or pass-through storage for bulky items like camping gear and folding chairs. The compartment above the cab in a Class C unit (called a “Luton” in the U.K.) can double as extra storage space when not in use as a bunk. Some models with a lower bunk count may replace the over-cab bed with storage cabinets. Finally, some Class Cs are toy hauler models that can carry a car or off-road vehicles in a rear garage with a deployable ramp for loading and unloading.
