A Closer Look At The Airstream Sport

Airstream recently took an opportunity to reflect on the history of its Sport travel trailer, a compact camper with roots reaching back 58 years. It all started in the 1960s when Wally Byam, founder of Airstream, designed a 16-foot travel trailer and took it on a trip from Cape Town to Cairo in Africa. While Byam was putting the RV through its paces and sending design notes back to company headquarters, he learned about an animal called an “O’Mbambi,” which Airstream describes as “a miniature deer revered by the Angolan locals for its strength and sure-footedness.” That’s where the original 16-foot “Bambi” trailer got its name, and that’s why all of the company’s single-axle campers, including the Sport, share the name to this day.

Two By Two By Two

The Airstream Sport is available in both 16- and 22-foot sizes, each with its own floor plan and décor options. The Sport 16RB features a more compact layout with a dinette/bed combination in the front, a kitchen in the middle with a three-cubic foot refrigerator and microwave, and a bed in the rear. It also has a wet bath with a pass-through hole where you can take the showerhead outside for exterior cleaning or for use with an outdoor shower. The Sport 22FB is a bit more spacious and features a bathroom with standalone shower, kitchen area with a 4.2-cubic foot refrigerator and microwave oven, a breakfast nook-like dinette, and a wider bed. Both Sport models can sleep up to four people.

More Standout Features
