Fifth Wheel
Peter Liegel had a vision to help people enjoy the outdoors. After working for Cobra Industries, he purchased assets from Cobra and founded Forest River in 1996. In subsequent years, Forest River purchased several companies, including US Cargo and Palomino.
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired Forest River in 2005, and since then, Forest River has acquired RV manufacturers Coachmen and Dynamax, among other companies. Forest River is based in Elkhart, Indiana, and has manufacturing facilities throughout the Midwest and West Coast.
Forest River manufactures a diverse lineup of RVs, including travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, park models (aka destination trailers), Class A (diesel and gas) and Class C motorhomes, and pop-up campers (aka tent trailers). Forest River’s recreational vehicle product lines offer a wide range of innovative features and amenities tailored to RV buyers’ varied budgets.
Fifth wheels and travel trailers represent the largest categories of new and used Forest River RVs for sale on RVUniverse.com. Forest River operates a dedicated toy hauler (or sport utility trailer) production facility, where it manufactures what is arguably the RV industry’s longest-running sport utility trailer model: the XLR Hyperlite. Other XLR models include the XLR Boost and XLR Nitro. The XLR Nitro offers various floorplans and standard features like backup cameras, 5,000-pound (2,268-kilogram) cargo tie-downs, and vacuum-bonded aluminum-framed sidewalls.
Forest River toy haulers include several other lines in the travel trailer toy hauler and fifth wheel toy hauler categories. Forest River’s lightweight Salem FSX is another popular toy hauler model group.
Common examples of Forest River Class A motorhomes include the Berkshire luxury model and the Georgetown lineup, such as the Georgetown, Georgetown GT7, and Georgetown XL, with multiple floor plan options. The Forester, Solera, and Sunseeker are popular Class C motorhomes.
You can typically find some Forest River Class B+ motorhomes on RVUniverse.com. Pop-up campers such as the Flagstaff Sports Enthusiast and Rockwood Freedom are also available.
Forest River is known for its focus on building durable, high-quality RVS. The company says it has a 20,000-square-foot (1,858-square-meter) pre-delivery inspection (PDI) facility where it conducts rigorous electrical, plumbing, functionality, rain bay, and other tests on randomly selected factory-new RVs in addition to inspections performed throughout the manufacturing process.
The company started the Forest River Owners’ Group (FROG) in 2011. Buyers can join for free, and members can attend rallies dedicated to Forest River RV owners throughout the U.S. and Canada.
