Winnebago revealed its eRV all-electric RV concept vehicle at the Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa last year, and at the same event a little over a week ago, the manufacturer unveiled the next step in the evolution of electric RVs: the eRV2. Winnebago says the next step is to subject the eRV2 prototype to rigorous field testing with customers in order to gain the insight that will inform the RV’s final design.
“Our primary goal in building the eRV2 was to help people comfortably explore the world around them with less environmental impact,” says Winnebago Outdoors President Huw Bower. “The user experience was at the heart of this prototype’s development, through the early days of market research and even now as it goes through field testing.”
Prototype Details
The eRV2 is based on Ford’s E-Transit chassis, which houses the propriety IonBlade battery system. Winnebago partnered with Lithionics Battery to develop the 48-volt system rated at more than 15,000 usable watt hours. IonBlade powers the eRV2’s all-electric powertrain and motorhome systems, and the lithium batteries can be recharged with the eRV2’s 900-watt-capacity solar system. Winnebago says the current prototype allows for seven days of boondocking. The prototype also works with Winnebago’s Connect system that automates energy management and allows owners to manage energy from the Connect app.
Environmentally Friendly Ethos
At the SuperShow, Winnebago emphasized a number of sustainable design elements of the eRV2 prototype. For example, the acrylic countertops are made from biodegradable materials and the cab seat coverings are made with renewable plant-based materials. Winnebago uses recycled materials throughout the interior, including the WinnSleep mattress system, the trim around the window frames, and the flooring. Owners can customize the interior lights from white to red in an effort to reduce light pollution, as well as negative effects to native flora and fauna.
Interior Design
With a five-in-one sleep space/lounge and two adaptable workspaces, the eRV2 is adaptable to the owner’s needs. Winnebago says the interior was inspired by “Japandi” principles, which brings together the clean, calm, and multi-function environments often found in Japanese and Scandinavian designs.
