If you’ve been looking for a good reason to hook up a new Airstream REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp 16X to your SUV and head into the great outdoors, Airstream recently highlighted seven must-see features that might help. Several relate to the environmentally friendly materials that Airstream and REI incorporated into a design that emphasizes sustainability. For example, the bench and bed cushions are covered in Knoll stain-resistant fabric, of which 50% is made from post-consumer recycled material, while 30% of the Tinted Paper Terrazzo interior laminate used on two bath walls is recycled content.

Water-Saving & Solar-Powered

Other environmentally friendly features highlighted by Airstream include the advanced UV-LED Smart Drinking Faucet and pre-filter that reduces bacteria and microorganisms while disinfecting potable water in the 21-gallon (79.5-liter) onboard fresh water tank. There’s also an exclusive recirculating water heater that supplies instant hot water to the shower and kitchen sink, which saves water that otherwise goes to waste while waiting for water to heat up. Customers also have two factory-installed solar panel options, including a 360-watt package with 200-Ah lithium battery bank that’s available as an upgrade to the included 200-watt flexible rooftop package.

A Glorious Galley & Large Rear Hatch

Another standout feature is the front-end galley, which combines spacious panoramic windows with several space-saving features, including an Epicurean cutting board that doubles as a sink cover to create more counter space. A tempered glass cover for the two-burner liquid propane stovetop similarly extends counter space. The travel trailer’s rear hatch door, meanwhile, grants access to a 26- by 46-inch (66- x 117-centimeter) space large enough to store bikes or other gear. A built-in L-track system lets you add quick-release clips for securing stowed gear, and three storage compartments on the inside of the hatch door are perfect for storing smaller essentials.

The X-Package & Co-op Kit

Airstream also points out the RV’s included X-Package, which is an available option on standard Basecamp 16 models. The package includes such off-road enhancements as a 3-inch (7.6-cm) lift kit, off-road tires and aluminum wheels, stainless-steel stone guards, and a front-window solar guard. Finally, there’s the 25-piece REI Co-op product kit including two Flexlite Camp Dreamer Chairs, OXO kitchen utensils, a rechargeable lantern, and other essentials.
