REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp Is Airstream’s Most Sustainable Travel Trailer To Date

Airstream has partnered with REI to design a new version of its Basecamp 16 travel trailer with an even greater focus on sustainability. The new REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp is constructed with lightweight, environmentally friendly materials and offers multiple new features to conserve water. Airstream also enhances the REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp’s off-road bona fides with its included X-Package, which upgrades to Goodyear Wrangler tires and aluminum wheels, a 3-inch lift kit, stainless-steel rock guards and a front-window solar guard.

Designed To Conserve Resources

Airstream adds a recirculating water heater to the REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp, providing instant hot water to the shower or kitchen sink—reducing water usage that might otherwise be wasted when waiting for hot water. Owners can set the trailer’s water temperature to between 95 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit using the on-demand control center. An optional compositing toilet is also available to use less of the potable water stored in the 21-gallon fresh water tank, while also prolonging the life of the 24-gallon combination holding tank. The Special Edition’s exclusive solar option includes 360 watts of flexible rooftop solar panels and a 200-Ah battery bank—a major upgrade over the 200-watt flexible rooftop solar panel package.

A Better Basecamp

The 16-foot Basecamp travel trailer features a convertible dinette and lounge, which can quickly be modified into a sleeping space. The REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp builds upon this design with more environmentally friendly choices like laminate and fabrics manufactured from post-consumer recycled materials. For example, the fabric on the bench seat and bed cushion comes from 50% post-consumer recycled content, and the sink cover is made entirely from recycled paper. Interior functionality of on the Special Edition is further enhanced with a 25-piece REI Co-op product kit that includes useful accessories like camp chairs, a picnic table and camp roll table, and other items that simplify setting up camp.
