A Look At Fleetwood RV’s 2018 Discovery Models
Fleetwood, a subsidiary of the REV Group, recently introduced its New Discovery model, which joins the Discovery LXE as two of the company’s most luxurious and feature-packed diesel Class A motor homes.
A Class A Primer
A Class A RV is a motorhome built on a custom commercial bus chassis, featuring a flat front, flat back, and sides that are the same width from bumper to bumper. Class As typically have two or more slide-outs, or expandable compartments, on them to increase the already ample interior cabin space. The high-end models have many luxury amenities, making them ideal for those who plan to use the motor home for weeks or months on end.
Discovery LXE
Fleetwood’s Discovery series is divided into two base models with a variety of floor plans available for each one. The major differentiator for the LXE version, which is where you’ll tend to find the higher-end features, is maximum size, both in wheelbase (up to 25.75 feet, or 7.8 meters) and overall length (up to 44 feet, or 13.4 meters).
The Discovery LXE 44H represents the largest model Fleetwood RV offers, and it is also the only model that can be equipped with a Cummins ISL9 engine capable of producing up to 1,250 pounds-foot (1,696 newton-meters) of torque and 450 horsepower (336 kilowatts). This titanic motorhome also features a 52,200-pound (22,678-kilogram) Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR), which refers to the maximum allowable weight of this motorhome with a towed vehicle, passengers, and cargo.
A second class of Discovery LXE models (40D, 40E, 40G, 40X) comes with engines capable of generating 1,150 pounds-foot of torque (1,559 newton-meters) and 380 horsepower (283 kilowatts), and GCWR limits of 46,400 pounds (21,047 kilograms). The smallest Discovery LXE models, the 38K and 39F, come with a 360-horsepower (268-kilowatt) Cummins ISB 6.7-liter engines capable of producing up to 800 pounds-foot (1,085 newton-meters) of torque.
Interior amenities vary based on the floor plan you choose, but all models come with a few standard features. These include a Bose soundbar and Blu-ray player, a Firefly Integrations electronic control system, polished porcelain tile flooring throughout, and a 20-foot Power Girard integrated awning with an LED light strip and wind sensor react, which can automatically retract the awning as the detected wind speed exceeds a predefined limit.
New Discovery (2018.5)
Recently, Fleetwood RV launched its New Discovery RVs, which have a couple of unique features not currently offered on the Discovery LXE models. There are three New Discovery models available, the 38K, 38F, and the all new 38N. Fleetwood RV is not updating the older Discovery 37R, 39F, and 39G models. According to the company, the revised 2018 Discovery RVs are the first diesel motorhomes in their class to include the Aqua-hot 400 series air/water heating system and a tiled shower, standard.
Other standout features (also available on Discovery LXE models) include 84-inch interior ceiling height, polished solid-surface countertops in the galley, hardwood cabinet doors and drawers, a central vacuum system, a 22-cubic-foot residential refrigerator, and a Firefly Integrations control panel. The three models ship with a 340-horsepower (254-kilowatt) ISB 6.7L Cummins Engine capable of producing 700 pounds-foot (949 newton-meters) of torque at 1,600 rpm, standard. These models can also upgrade to a Cummins ISB engine that produces 360 horsepower (268-kilowatt) and 800 pounds-foot (1,085 newton-meters) of torque at 1,800 rpm.
